Wow! What a day for our home team Nordic ski racers. The boys won even without Seth Prigge who was a little under the weather this week. And the girls won going away. Lots of folks who follow nordic sking closely thought the Ely girls might win over Duluth East and Mesabi East yesterday. No one thought they would win by over 20 points. Jaws dropped. On to the Section 7 finals next Thursday at Giants Ridge. Good luck skiers.
The Hidden Valley trails are now back open to the public and skiing is great. We had a few inches of fresh snow today (Saturday); come on out and enjoy the great outdoors.
Our ski trails will be closed to the public starting at 5:00 P.M. Thursday, January 28, 2016 through Friday at 5:00 P.M. This will allow the pursuit race managers to complete grooming of the race courses and marking of the routes for both skate and classic races. We ask that the public come and enjoy watching the races but stay off all the trails at Hidden Valley to ensure the racers have a successful day. Thanks, everyone. See you on race day.
Hear ye, hear ye. The Ely Nordic Ski Club is hosting the final Section 7 Pursuit Race of the season at Hidden Valley on Friday, January 29, 2016. This will be an all day event with 10 teams and hundreds of skiers arriving by as early as 9:00 A.M., with races atarting at 11:00 A.M. and ending in the late afternoon. There will be two separate 5K loops reserved for ski racers and we ask that the public stay off the actual race courses that day. Our Nordic ski teams have been doing well and this is the last real test before Sections at Giant's Ridge on February 4. Come on out and support our skiers.
Both the Ely Boys and the Ely Girls Nordic teams skied their way to the top of the leader board Friday at the Snowflake ski area, home of the Duluth East Greyhounds. The format was a pursuit race, which means a free style skate race in the morning and a classic race in the afternoon with classic start times determined by the first race. This format is great for spectators and is what happens at Sections and in the State meet. So this race was important. Now, as usual, not all the top competitors were present, so this is just indicative and we know the Sections will be very close, so stay tuned and support these great teams from the smalllest school on the circuit.
Ely Girls: First Place. Ely Boys: Second Place. Not a bad day's work skiing at minus 8 degrees at the meet in Cloquet today. We can't get too excited as not all the schools were present and not all the key skiers raced, but we'll take it. Next up: The Marshall Sprints next Saturday in Duluth. Stay tuned.
