Healthy Thursdays
Get Involved in "Healthy Thursdays"
The Community Health Council is beginning an initiative called Healthy
Thursdays. We are hoping to help members of our community improve
their overall health, beginning with physical fitness. Longevity
studies have shown that supportive exercise groups (people who meet
regularly to walk/exercise and visit) are very valuable.
Our Idea: We would like to have everyone get some sort of exercise
every Thursday. We believe it is easier for people to get started
if there is a plan and a group leader.
Our plan: Starting in February have community members lead a Healthy
Thursday option for about a month. We believe interpersonal
connection is important so we need the group leader to welcome
whomever comes, have the group do introductions and then encourage
interaction during the exercise--harder with skiing than walking
perhaps. Encourage participants to come back next week. After
several weeks encourage participants to continue on their own either
at that same time or another or by adding times.
You are needed: We would love to see skiing included in Healthy
Thursdays because it is such a vital part of our community. Would you
be willing to be a group leader for a Trezona ski--South side or full
loop, Hidden Valley ski (lots of people are intimidated to come out to
Hidden Valley because they feel like they are not good enough), or
even a ski lesson in Whiteside with just a little end to end ski
afterwards? I used to hear about a Friday ski group. I don't know if
it is still happening, if not anyone want to start up again on
Thursdays? We are open to advertising your favorite form of exercise
led by you. We are also looking for leaders in Tower, Babbitt,
Winton, Embarrass if anyone is inspired to lead an activity wherever
your home is.
Times: You name the time, we'll do the advertising. This is a long
term plan we hope to enact for the community, so we are looking beyond
Feb, but hope to have several activities to offer each Thursday
starting in February.
