The Boathouse Winter Classic Triathlon
Go to the Ely Nordic website, click on the Events tab to learn more about the triathlon to be held during the Ely Winter Festival. Snowshoe, ski and drink water. Sounds like a good time, doesn't it? The event will also be looking for volunteers to help run it. Contact ENSC board member Elton Brown if you're interested:

, 365-4343. Even if you've never helped with an event before, think about this one. It'll be low key and a lot of fun!
Free Adult Ski Lessons
Free ski lessons are being offered on Wednesdays at 4:30, beginning on the 18th. Tell any beginner, novice or intermediate skier that they would take advantage of this. Contact Barb Hall if interested, and she'll make sure that we have enough instructors present:

Trail Updates
The Ely Nordic Website is now being updated bi-weekly with grooming updates. Go to
www.elynordic.org, click on the Trails tab, then Trail Report and choose Hidden Valley or Trezona. You will be able to view the most current conditions. The Trezona has not been updated recently as it hasn't snowed changed, but it will be shortly. Do not predict the conditions out at Hidden Valley based on what you see in town--the skating in particular is very good out there right now. There will be a small high school ski meet out at Hidden Valley on Saturday the 14th. Come and see Ely's best. Warmth and concessions will be available in the chalet.
Skiing the Wrong Way Right
Skiers, please note that many trails at Hidden Valley are one-way trails. They should be skied as such most of the time. If you choose to ski the wrong way, you should ski conservatively, in single file if you're with a group, and yield to oncoming traffic. The Nordic Wolves ski team at times uses a section of trail for training, skiing both directions. If you see coaches or high school skiers on the trails, expect that they are using that area and may be skiing backwards on the trail system for training purposes. They will do their best to do so respectfully.
Jacob Dalberg
Former Ely high school skier Jacob Dalberg had an impressive race up in Alaska recently, winning his first biathlon competition. Read about it

Worried About Snow? You should be.
Author Bill McKibben wrote a sobering article about the future of winter. It can be read in its entirety:
The End of Winter.
