Ely Area Trail Info

Trails are maintained year-round, mostly by volunteers. Many hours of labor go into trail maintenance. Please respect the non-motorized use policy.  No dogs are allowed on groomed trails. The MN ski pass is required on all ski trails. Trail reports provided by volunteers and club board members.

Hidden Valley Recreation Area

Located approximately 0.3 miles from Ely city limits, the trailhead includes a heated chalet that will be open to paid club members via Key-less entry.  Throughout the winter, the 25+km of classic & skate ski trails are machine-groomed on a consistent basis. Check the Trail Report for daily conditions. Skier-submitted reports are also available on SkinnySki.comThe MN ski pass is required and if you are skiing as a non-member, a donation of $5 per day is requested.

RESPECT THE TRACK

  • Do not skate over tracks.
  • Do not herring-bone over tracks.

SKI IN THE PROPER DIRECTION

  • For your pleasure and safety, hills and curves are groomed for a specific direction of travel.

RESPECT CLOSED TRAILS

  • Trails may be closed due to rain or thaw.
  • Expect evening closures for grooming.

STAY IN YOUR LANE

  • Ski only on ski trails.
  • Do not skate on classic-only trails.
  • Do not ski on bike trails.

SNOW-SHOEING AT  HIDDEN  VALLEY

WEAR SNOW SHOES

  • Walking in just boots is not allowed anywhere out here.

STAY IN YOUR LANE

  • Snow shoe only on the bike trails (reverse direction).
  • Keep off ski trails.

OBSERVE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL

  • Follow the color coded signs, they will guide you in the reverse direction of bike flow.
  • Expect oncoming traffic.
  • Yield to oncoming bikers.
  • Walk single file.

RESPECT TRAIL CLOSURES

  • Trails are frequently closed for grooming, usually at night.

PREPARE YOURSELF

  • These trails are long and strenuous.
  • Wear appropriate clothing.
  • Bring water, snacks and a headlamp.

Trezona Trail

The Trezona Trail is within the Ely city limits. The trailhead includes a parking lot and a portable outhouse. Throughout the winter the 6.5 km of skating and classical trails are groomed, but the trails are also used by walkers and dogs. Check the Trail Report for daily conditions. Skier-submitted reports are also available on SkinnySki.com.

FAT-TIRE BIKING AT  HIDDEN  VALLEY

FAT TIRES ONLY

  • Minimum tire width is 4”
  • Reduce your tire pressure. Softer conditions require lower pressure.

RIDE IN THE PROPER DIRECTION

  • For your safety and the safety of others, ride only in a counter-clockwise direction.  Follow the signs.
  • Expect oncoming traffic from shoe-shoers, they are part of our grooming plan.

STAY IN YOUR LANE

  • Bike only on bike trails.
  • Stay off of ski trails.

RESPECT TRAIL CLOSURES

  • Do not bike on closed trails.
  • Trails may occasionally be closed due to unsuitable conditions or for grooming.
  • Expect evening closures for grooming.
